AI jobs Australia: Where the new tech roles are emerging

What searches for "ai jobs australia" reveal about the tech market

The number of distinct roles mentioning artificial intelligence is growing rapidly. In the March quarter of 2026, 71 normalised job titles in Australia included at least five postings mentioning AI, more than tripling over the past year [10].

While 61% of these roles remain in the technology sector, this share has fallen from 75% between 2022 and 2024, indicating that AI requirements are spreading to fields like sales, management, and education [10].

Despite the growth in AI-specific roles, the broader IT industry is subdued. In 2025-26, the IT industry recruitment rate was 32 percent, well below the all-industry average of 49 percent [4]. Competition for available roles is tight, with 34 percent of recruiting IT employers receiving 20 or more applicants per vacancy [4].

Data centres drive new employment infrastructure

The physical infrastructure required to support artificial intelligence is creating a distinct hiring boom. Australia is forecast to invest approximately $150 billion in new data centre capacity by 2030 [8].

Investment here leads directly to labor demand. About 1 percent of current job ads in Australia relate to data centers; this is roughly 2.5 times what it was just last year [8]. That could lead to strain on resources which might result in rising costs for labor, construction materials and electrical equipment too [8].

Projects focus strongly on eastern Australia; NSW hosts 48 operational data centers right now, VIC has 38 and QLD has 25 [8].

Jobs hiring now and the early Christmas rush

Australian workers seeking casual or seasonal jobs are seeing this year's hiring season starting much earlier than usual.

By the end of August 2026, there was an increase compared to last year with 1.8 percent of job listings mentioning Christmas in titles on Indeed versus 1.0 percent previously; this is also higher than for 2023 and 2024 [9].

Job searchers have matched this early surge in hiring. By late August searches for jobs related to Christmas were up to 1.4 percent of all searches on Indeed versus 1.3 percent from last year [9]. This uptick matches a broad national trend showing that seasonally adjusted unemployment rose by 0.2 percentage points to 4.6 percent in August 2026 [1].

Addressing the skills shortage in Australia with human capabilities

With technological changes altering job requirements, government data highlights a shift in what employers need. The national fill rate for job vacancies was 69.1% in the June quarter of 2026, remaining 1.0 percentage point lower than a year earlier [7].

When looking for jobs, candidates should emphasize skills which machines can't match. Jobs and Skills Australia points out that qualities like communication, judgment, teamwork, leadership and flexibility have become especially important in all sorts of industries [6].

That's clearly true also in specific disciplines; take surveyors and spatial scientists for instance. Demand continues to be high there but new technologies are altering what those jobs require now with an increased focus on both digital skills and communications along with technical know-how [5].

Finding jobs that pay well as wage growth continues

While certain sectors such as data centers and retail have grown, overall there has been a cooling of the vacancy market. Total job vacancies decreased by 2.1 percent to 329,500 in the three months to May 2026 [2]. Private sector vacancies fell by 1.4 percent, while public sector vacancies dropped 7.9 percent over the same period [2].

Despite having fewer total jobs advertised overall, there was a small rise of 0.3 percent for ads posted online in August 2026; operators of machinery and drivers along with sales workers showed strong increases [5]. Growth in ad postings has been higher regionally compared to recent years but major capitals have seen decreases continue [5].

Wages keep rising but different sectors have varying rates of increase. Seasonally adjusting we see that the Wage Price Index increased by 0.8 percent for the June quarter of 2026 and this brings the year on year growth rate up to 3.2 percent. [3]
