How to Find Jobs That Pay Well as the Labour Market Shifts

The National Search for Jobs That Pay Well

This week Google search data shows an emphasis on securing financial stability; Australians are looking up things like "jobs that pay well", "highest paying jobs in australia", and "jobs that pay 100k a year australia". They are also seeking out "jobs with no experience high pay", indicating they want entry level positions that command good salaries. The spike in such high salary searches correlates closely with general economic pressure. Indeed has reported that interest in seasonal employment related to Christmas started very early this year; this might be due partly to the ongoing cost of living crisis and rising national unemployment reaching levels higher than seen since the pandemic ended. [11].

To get an understanding of what is happening in real wages, people looking for work should check official statistics. Over the last year through the June quarter of 2026, the Wage Price Index has risen by 3.2 percent [3]. For that quarter specifically, public sector wages have grown by 0.9 percent whereas private sector wages went up by 0.7 percent [3]. Industries that contributed most to growth in this quarter include those related to Public administration and safety where wages rose by 1.1 percent and health care and social assistance where wages also rose by 0.5 percent [3]. Being aware of such leading sectors will be useful for job hunters targeting areas that show strong momentum for pay increases.

Shifting Vacancies and the Infrastructure Boom

Despite softening somewhat across the board for recruitment, there is still strong concentration of opportunities in certain sectors. Job openings dropped to 325,000 in August 2026 with a quarter reduction of 0.9 percent [2], but this reduction was not consistent; private sector vacancies declined by 2.0 percent to 286,300 while public sector positions increased by 7.8 percent to 38,700 [2]. This suggests that jobs related to government and administration have become an important source of new employment opportunities.

While there is also an increase in investments into physical infrastructure due to advances in AI technology, Australia is expected to invest about $150 billion in new data center capacity by 2030 [10]. Such large investments have already affected employment markets; indeed ads mentioning data centers now account for roughly 1% of total ads seeking jobs on Indeed, a figure 2.5 times higher than a year ago [10]. Projects are very focused along the eastern seaboard with NSW running 48 data centers and Victoria having 38 [10]. People interested in tech positions, electricians or construction work might find good openings in this fast-growing sector.

According to the Internet Vacancy Index for August 2026, national postings of advertised jobs on line increased by 0.3 percent broadly speaking [7]. Strongest month on month rises have been seen among operators of heavy machinery along with drivers alongside sales staff [7]. In terms of geographical location, both Northern Territory and Victoria saw very strong rises in advertised jobs this month [7], while capitals have continued to show year on year decreases [7]. This suggests that roles in regional locations and specific manual or sales positions are faring better compared to corporate offices located centrally.

Understanding Redundancy and Changing Displacement Trends

Concerned people should note that recent data gives us a clearer view on trends regarding redundancies. Over the period from 2015 to 2025 there has been an improvement; the national rate of worker displacement declined from around 6 percent to 4 percent [5]. Separation through choice rose from 53 percent to 58 percent of total separations whereas separation due to lack of choice dropped from 39 percent to 30 percent [5]. Overall though there has been a marked shift in who these displacements affect.

There has been a shift away from technical trades related to mining work in remote regions toward services and professional roles and management positions in larger cities such as Sydney and Melbourne [5]. Professionals highly skilled in fields like finance, media and information technology are also now vulnerable to being displaced due to redundancies; this risk is becoming especially pronounced in Sydney and Melbourne [4]. There is also an increase in insolvency displacements that affect smaller firms; workers who lose jobs here often lack access to severance pay and other usual employment benefits [5]. It is important for professionals working in large cities to understand these underlying changes affecting careers.

Practical Steps to Secure High-Paying and Stable Roles

As competition rises across different industries, job seekers need to adjust their approach. Take for example the IT sector which has seen reduced hiring recently; this year in 2025–26 there has been a recruitment rate of 32% compared to an overall average of 49 percent [6] and 34 percent of IT recruiters receive 20 or more applications per position [6]. Candidates who want to succeed in highly competitive areas will do better focusing on development and emphasizing unique human attributes. Jobs and Skills Australia points out that qualities like communication, judgment, teamwork, leadership and flexibility are now especially important because of fast changes brought about by technology and artificial intelligence shaping workplaces today [8].

An immediate option would be targeting seasonal employment needs. Job postings related to Christmas began earlier this year; indeed data shows that at the end of August there were 1.8 percent of total Australian jobs advertised which mentioned Christmas compared to 1.0 percent in the same period last year [11]. Job seekers are now looking for these positions much sooner compared with recent years [11], making an early application is essential.

Looking at listings that we've reviewed this week, we found 2695 unique listings in total. From those listings, 4 percent of them send candidates directly to employers' sites. For the applications submitted through these listings, the arrangement types include 51 positions full time, 38 where status is unspecified, 15 contracts or temporary placements and 1 casuals or vacation roles. Owtomate applies to matching jobs on SEEK and Indeed on a job seeker's behalf.
